TURRAMURRA, NORTH TURRAMURRA, SOUTH TURRAMURRA ARCHITECTS
Innovative designs for modern family living
Turramurra, North Turramurra and South Turramurra
On Sydney’s Upper North Shore, Turramurra, North Turramurra and South Turramurra share more than just a postcode – they share a reputation for space, greenery and family-friendly living. These suburbs feel worlds away from the hustle of the city. Yet a 40-minute commute still connects residents directly to the CBD.
Here generous blocks roll across elevated sites, complemented by sweeping views, mature gardens and leafy streetscapes. Heritage homes from the early 20th century sit proudly among them, testament to a long tradition of fine architecture, including Sir John Sulman, the architect behind the exquisitely preserved Federation-era, Queen Anne-style masterpiece, Ingleholme, designed by Sir John Sulman.
At Ironbark, we’re inspired by the legacy of creativity and craftsmanship and would love to be part of your home-building journey.
WE UNDERSTAND TURRAMURRA, NORTH TURRAMURRA, SOUTH TURRAMURRA
As part of Ku-ring-gai Council, the suburbs of Turramurra, North Turramurra and South Turramurra offer a leafy, private retreat from the city buzz. As architects in Turramurra, we help homeowners capture this tranquillity in their family homes embracing privacy and harmony in their living space, while also deepening the connection to the area’s natural landscape.
Turramurra is in a unique position to embrace its natural attributes. The suburb draws its name from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘big hill’ or ‘high place’, believed to refer to the range that stretches towards Pymble. This naturally-raised topography provides opportunities for capturing light, breezes and stunning views.
The 2074 postcode is also home to a number of heritage-listed homes and conservation areas. These parts of Turramurra are of historic and aesthetic significance for a number of reasons, including its Inter-war and Federation architecture (some, like Ingleholme, in the Queen Anne style), mature landscape settings including streets lined with brush box and scenic views.
BECAUSE WE’RE TURRAMURRA ARCHITECTS, WE UNDERSTAND:
How to embrace the suburb’s tranquillity and privacy in local homes
The importance of preserving heritage buildings
How to add thoughtful modern features to boost the comfort level in home renovations
The significance of letting a landscape inform a design
How to harness passive and sustainable design principles
The best bushfire-resilient materials that don’t compromise aesthetics
How to design a dwelling that complements mature landscaping
That every home is a thoughtful reflection of the people who live inside

Working as architects in Turramurra is a privilege because these suburbs offer a unique blend of heritage, landscape and lifestyle. Renovating here often means breathing life into older homes in a way that’s nuanced and thoughtful, showing sensitivity to their character and history.
We have deep respect for older styles of architecture and understand their importance in the local history. As architects we reimagine layouts and make gentle adjustments so your home becomes more functional and liveable for your modern family, without losing the charm that makes it unique and possible.
On the other hand, if you’re starting fresh with a new build, we can help you envision and create the home of your dreams shaped around the way that you live. As experienced Sydney home designers, we take the time to dive into both your needs and wants – that might be a mudroom for outdoor gear, or a rain water harvesting system to capture Turramurra’s high annual rainfall. We ask the right questions to get the little details right.
If you have a new build or home renovation project in Turramurra, please get in touch. We’d love to help!

Living close to natural native bushland areas and national parks brings the gift of birdsong and walking trains right on your doorstep. But it also means that bushfire resilience is essential.
But designing a bushfire-resilient home doesn’t have to mean living in a bunker made of bessa blocks. Advances in materials and design allow us to weave strength and style together using elements like steel sheeting, brick and other fire-resistant finishes in ways that feel seamless and architectural.
Bushfire-zone regulations certainly mean extra considerations in the design stage, but as specialists in bushfire architecture our team see bushfire regulations not as limitations, but as opportunities to craft homes that are safe, sustainable and stunning.

Sloping sites can be a gift for architects who are experienced in passive design. Elevated topography allows for capturing breezes, providing shade and funnelling in light as needed.
Passive design is all about allowing the dwelling to respond to the landscape it’s built upon. Techniques such as controlling cross-ventilation for natural airflow and adding overhangs and shutters to mute the harsh Aussie sun, can make a world of difference to the comfort factor of your home.
Whether you’re starting new on a bare site or completing a home renovation in Turramurra, you can still achieve a sustainable, energy-efficient home. Our team’s intimate understanding of the local climate and natural environment means we know where the potential lies.
As passive home designers in Turramurra, Sydney, we’ll ensure your living space is comfortable and healthy for your family.
We engaged with Chris from Ironbark Architecture to design our home. When meeting with Chris initially he listened to us and really wanted to understand our lives and how we will live in the space, to ensure the design would suit our lifestyles. We met with other architects from the area and they simply didn't listen and wanted to push the same agenda as every other house they design.
Chris is very detailed and is willing to think of alternative ways to make things work. Throughout the design stage he pushed us to consider ideas that we hadn't thought of (which is totally the point of engaging with an architect!!!). Without this, our design wouldn't be anywhere near as good as it is. We really enjoyed working with Chris, he has been incredibly helpful, doesn't force a house on you that looks like every other house, has a strong ethos on sustainability and is extremely detailed. He designed a home for us that we can't wait to move into (the build has just started)! I would highly recommend him.

Working with an architect that understands Turramurra means working with someone who also understands the suburb’s unique landscape, heritage and bushfire considerations. We know how to make the most of sloping sites, leafy streetscapes and large blocks, creating designs that feel at home in the area while reflecting your lifestyle.
We live in northern Sydney too. So we understand how it is to live here and can help you create a home that embraces the best that the area has to offer.

The elevated topography in these suburbs can create more challenges in terms of design and the actual building process – but it also brings opportunities. We find that the surrounding landscape is often under-utilised or even ignored in sloping sites. We aim to strengthen the building’s connection to place by introducing architectural ideas such as split-level living spaces, secret courtyards, and of course vantage points to enjoy the view.
