KILLARA & EAST KILLARA
The leafy suburbs of Killara and East Killara sit proudly on Sydney’s Upper North Shore. Locals love living here for the spacious blocks, established gardens and safe, family-friendly community.
Located just 15km from the city, Killara blends natural serenity with prestige, making it a coveted location for those seeking a balance of privacy, community and architectural character.
When it comes to buildings and architecture, the area is rich in both heritage and green space. Gardens, parks and reserves, such as Killara’s Swain Gardens, the Lane Cove National Park and the scenic Two Creeks Track are local favourites, while Regimental Park and Garigal National Park extend this natural buffer into East Killara. The suburb also falls within a recognised Urban Conservation Area, with many streets lined with Federation and Californian Bungalow homes that reflect the suburb’s early 20th-century charm.
At Ironbark Architecture, we love working in Killara and designing homes that fit naturally within its leafy character. Our goal is to respect its heritage while embracing modern living. Whether you’re building from the ground up or renovating a home in the area, we’ll help you create a home that feels both timeless and tailored to your needs and lifestyle. Its charm also resonates with Pymble, Turramurra and Wahroonga, where leafy streets, heritage homes and generous blocks define the local lifestyle.
KILLARA ARCHITECTS
Designs that honour land, lifestyle and legacy.
WE UNDERSTAND KILLARA
Killara’s name comes from an Aboriginal word meaning ‘always there’ or ‘permanent place’. So, we carry that legacy forward in our approach to design – creating homes that endure both in style and function.
As Killara architects, we listen closely to the needs of our clients and respond to the unique qualities of each site as well as the surrounding environment. From the mature trees that shade many streets, to the sloping topography common in East Killara and the flatter topography below the ridge line, our designs work with the environment rather than against it.
Whether you want to reimagine an existing structure or start fresh with a new build, we can help you design a home that reflects your lifestyle and enhances the natural beauty of the land around it.
BECAUSE WE’RE KILLARA ARCHITECTS WE UNDERSTAND:
How to work within the Killara Conservation Area guidelines
Ways to preserve native tree canopies and surrounding vegetation while designing light-filled spaces
How to make the most of generous blocks, sustainably
Techniques for updating heritage-style homes with modern functionality
The design preferences of growing families
How to manage planning in bushfire-prone areas that abut important bushland areas
Great design that elevates your lifestyle and increases your long-term value
The importance of luxury and sustainability in materials, proportions and flow
How to navigate council approvals and neighbour notification processes in an area where views and outlooks are highly valued
OUR WORK
The architecture here runs the gamut, but many of the homes were built in a time when big gardens and blocks were the norm. You’ll find grand old homes that have been beautifully renovated to be modern escapes, as well as homes ready for that updated touch.

From restoring gracious Federation residences to delivering contemporary new builds, Ironbark Architecture is proud to support clients with both renovations and new home designs in Killara and East Killara.
As North Shore locals, we understand that homes in these areas often carry sentimental and historical value. Our work respects that legacy, and we always look to enhance and elevate rather than erase the character and history of existing homes. Many of our clients come to us with older homes that no longer serve their needs, and we offer thoughtful solutions that maintain charm while introducing light, function and flexibility.
When it comes to building new, we take advantage of Killara and East Killara’s large blocks and green surrounds to create homes that feel expansive, peaceful and deeply connected to place. Whether you’re dreaming of a family sanctuary, an entertainer’s home or a private, quiet retreat, we’re here to advise and guide you through every step.

While East Killara leads directly onto Garigal National Park, many homes in both Killara and East Killara are considered bushfire prone due to the leafy streetscapes and proximity to bushland. Because of this, it’s important to consider bushfire resilience whenever you’re designing for homes in these suburbs.
But designing for bushfire resilience doesn’t mean compromising on aesthetics or lifestyle.
As experienced architects working in BAL-rated areas, we combine form and function with fire-safe materials and compliant siting strategies to ensure you have all the comfort and beauty you desire while still keeping your home safe and protected.
We also work collaboratively with bushfire consultants to ensure that all regulations and requirements are met or exceeded at all times.

Sustainable architecture in leafy suburbs like Killara and East Killara starts with the land itself. Generous setbacks, native vegetation and mature tree lines offer natural advantages for thermal comfort and passive design.
Our team uses passive design principles such as orientation, ventilation strategies and carefully selected materials to create homes that are cool in summer, warm in winter and efficient all year round. Our team is absolutely committed to helping clients reduce their environmental footprint while maximising the long-term comfort and value of their homes.
As Killara-experienced architects, we will design a space that reflects your values and enhances your lifestyle, both for today and for decades to come.

Areas along the Ku-ring-gai Ridge may also require understanding how to build on steep properties, and many areas are also required to meet bush fire regulations.
