PYMBLE

Sydney Blue Gums, Blackbutt and Forest Oaks shape the landscape of the Upper North Shore, and gives us it’s colloquial name of the ‘leafy North Shore’. Pymble, a prominent suburb in this area is highly coveted for its tree-lined streets, pockets of bushland and nature reserves like the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden, Dalrymple-Hay Nature Reserve and Sheldon Forest.

We regularly design homes across Pymble and neighbouring Upper North Shore suburbs such as Killara, Gordon, Turramurra and Wahroonga, each with its own beautiful treescapes and architectural character.

Pymble itself offers expansive parcels of land, green, leafy parks and easy access to the prestigious Upper North Shore schools, making it a popular choice for families. The suburb is largely made up of freestanding houses, with a small number of units. Thanks to the generous block sizes, homes are often generously sized, with more than half of all private homes featuring four or more bedrooms.

Heritage-listed properties have additional protections, such as the Pymble Heights Conservation Area consisting of Victorian, Federation and Inter-war period housing. But many older homes without historical significance are now making way for new builds. Locals love Pymble for these large blocks, spacious gardens and peaceful streetscapes.

Here at Ironbark Architecture, we love to create beautiful, sustainable homes that complement the lovely local landscape of the Pymble area. If you’re looking for an architect in Pymble, we’d love to work with you to bring your dream home to life.

WE UNDERSTAND PYMBLE

To us, a home is far more than a façade and a workable layout. It’s where life happens – your life – the ups, the downs and all the in-between little moments. We love to create unique homes that embrace the way you live and elevate both your daylight and dreaming hours.

As Pymble architects, we understand both the local architecture and the landscape. We have the skills and the expertise to read the site, see what the space could be and use those factors to bring your vision for your home to life. We always pay close attention to detail so everything is considered and carefully implemented.

When you choose Ironbark Architecture, you’re choosing quality and expertise, as well as a home design that will help your family build the life of your dreams.

BECAUSE WE’RE PYMBLE ARCHITECTS WE UNDERSTAND:

  • That the native flora is part of Pymble’s charm, and it’s our role to help protect and preserve it

  • The clever use of large blocks – and that doesn’t always mean a bigger house

  • Local conservation zones and heritage listings

  • Smart design practices to insulate against Sydney’s cold winters and hot summers

  • The importance of working closely with clients to understand how the home will be lived in

  • How to manipulate materials and tools to design for bushfire resilience

  • The balance of maintaining character while embracing innovation

  • How to maximise Pymble’s charm in a residence

  • How to navigate council approvals and neighbour notification processes, particularly in conservation and heritage areas, or where outlooks may be impacted

  • As Pymble architects, we know the advantages that building in this suburb brings. Perhaps you’re pondering a home extension to take advantage of those generous Pymble blocks. Or maybe you’re considering a home renovation on an existing Pymble residence, to bring it up to date with modern living. Or you could be planning to start with a clean slate and a new build.

We’d love to hear your vision for your project. At Ironbark Architecture, we work closely with our clients to ensure we’re on the same page the whole way through the process. We want your home to be an extension and reflection of you and the lifestyle you want to live.

    New Homes | Renovations

  • The Upper North Shore is famous for its towering trees and native vegetation – and these bring the natural risk of bush fire. So, as Pymble architects, we understand the importance of balancing the preservation of local flora with bushfire protection.

Fortunately, we also understand bushfire resilient building design. Fire-resistant materials can be used in a beautiful way to decrease risk while still maintaining those all-important aesthetics. Passive design principles can help use the land and the surrounding vegetation to its best to protect your property.

Whatever your unique needs, we always take bushfire design seriously. Each site is assessed for its Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) and this informs how we proceed with your design. We also work closely with bushfire consultants and use tools published by the Rural Fire Service (RFS) to make sure we’re meeting all design requirements and creating a home that is as safe as it is beautiful and liveable.

    Bushfire Design

  • Over our years working and designing across the North Shore, we’ve come to love the natural beauty of the area. Whether your block has a few trees or hundreds, we always allow the site to inform our designs while embracing passive design principles for excellent outcomes. In our Alcheringa project, for example, we built a new residence while staying within the original footprint, which meant not one tree needed to be removed.

Our current Wirringulla project in Ku-ring-gai National Park is another example of stunning passive design on bushy blocks. We’ve used double-glazing, a solar PV system and insulation in this off-grid design to create a home that is as beautiful as it is comfortable.

Our team enjoys the challenge of blending passive design principles with modern home aesthetics. Our goal is to ensure you’ll enjoy your home for many years to come.

    Passive & Sustainable Design

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • Yes! We adore the Upper North Shore and aim to bring some of that leafy charm into every one of our sustainable home designs. We look to the local environment, the unique site and our clients’ lifestyles to inform our designs.

  • There are many things to love about building and renovating in Pymble. The spacious blocks, established treescapes, sprawling gardens and quality architecture are just a few drawcards.

As architects working in this area, we also ensure that we’re always informed about conservation areas, heritage listings and bushfire BAL ratings. We’re here to create designs that help you maximise the potential available in Pymble.

  • Passive design uses natural elements and building materials to achieve comfortable living within a building. Ideally, these principles should be used in such a way that they limit the need for excessive energy consumption. Not only is this better for the environment, but also your wallet.

Ironbark Architecture has many different ways we embrace passive design in our work. This includes things like building orientation to capture sunlight and airflow, maximising the natural shade provided by trees, seeking natural light from the sun and double-glazing on windows for insulation.
